Inspired by Kate Cavanaugh Writes on YouTube, this article features a character-building exercise. Have you ever panicked when someone asks you what to get you for Christmas or your birthday? Knowing our wants and needs can be a very tricky thing, but how good are your characters at knowing themselves? The following five prompts will allow you to learn more about your characters through gifts.
The best part of this exercise is that you don't actually have to incorporate gifts into your plot. But if you do want to, gifts can serve many purposes and help you know your characters better. Gifts can surprise the reader by showing that characters have been paying attention to each other. They can reflect and build relationships between characters. Receiving gifts can also be a relatable experience shared between character and reader. To wrap it up (pun intended!) we at JUVEN hope these questions have helped you develop your characters and wish you happy holidays! Grayson Yountis a writer based in North Carolina. She attends writing classes of all kinds at UNC Chapel Hill and has a particular fondness for sharp imagery. In her free time, she drafts her own novels. MORE FROM THIS AUTHOR:
