Book Review: Captured by Makayla Jade5/17/2023 Review by Gaby Pheonix
The era of dystopian novels is not over yet and this book absolutely shows it. Written by Makayla Jade, Captured is the first book of the trilogy The Genesis Awakening, and it brings back all the feelings of the dystopian era with strong protagonists going against a corrupt government. I do not remember when I first encountered the term Magical Realism, but I do know that it came to me like home, like it does with so many latin american authors.
However, I was wary to immerse myself in such a vast and complex genre. The 60s prose seems to be too antiquated for me, the problems of white latin men too alien, and the volumes were too thick, heavy, scaring my whirlwind of a mind. Still I yearned to know more about this genre that feels as sweet as hot chocolate. I wanted my words to dress the canvas of shelves that read “Magical Realism” at libraries. In this day and age we can start to forget about our trans future. So to remind you my beautiful reader that trans people have existed in the past and will continue to exist in the future, I bring to you 5 sci-fi short stories with trans main characters, and what’s best! They are all free to access if you’ve got internet.
“To travel far, there is no better ship than a book.” - Emily Dickinson
We want to see the world and the marvels it has to offer. Explore new places, their food, their rivers, their secret alleyways. The way light enters through a tinted window or the scent of a forest. Even further, we want to discover new worlds, places with majestic creatures and plants. That is simply human nature. If you ever wanted to start reading science fiction, but simply don’t know where to start, short stories are the perfect option. Impactful, surprising, innovative. Short stories will allow you to explore the genre without having to commit to entire epic sagas. These are five recommendations to begin your journey.
