November will be a month of ecstasy for the book community, it seems. From promising debut titles to long-expected sequels, here’s a list of five book releases you can’t miss this month. Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen Coming out on November 2nd, this novel is soaked in West African mythology. We follow Simi, a girl who’s become Mami Wata as a way to serve the gods she once prayed to. Her duty is to safely return home every soul who’s found death at the sea, for she is a mermaid. However, when she saves the life of a boy who fell from his ship, she must begin an expedition to set things right with the gods. If she doesn’t, it’s not only her who will be punished, but also other Mami Wata, and the whole world. To begin with, the cover is stunning. The golden and water details are outstanding. I am intrigued by the West African mythological elements and Simi’s character. What drove her to ask help from the gods? What’s life like when you’re a Mami Wata? I believe that if you’re looking for an epic read with rich settings, this might be a book for you. Gilded by Marissa Meyer Also coming out November 2nd, this book tangles a dark retelling of Rumplestinskin into a world of hunters, ghouls, and phantoms. Serilda is pulled into this world when one of her tales is brought to an ominous man’s attention. This obscure place holds nothing but secretes and curses for her. Somehow, she’ll manage to find a boy who will offer her a bargain. Perhaps, he will help her when she’s about to sink into deep despair. Perhaps, he will bring doom upon her. I’ve been reading Marissa’s work for a long time now, and I’ve seen her writing style evolve in each book. Personally, Rumplestiltskin used to be my favorite fairytale, and I can’t wait to see what spin Marissa puts to it. You've Reached Sam by Dustin Thao The story of a girl who loses her boyfriend in an accident, just when they’re about to reach their goals. In a night of hopelessness, she calls Sam, just to listen to his voice again. And he picks up. This heart-wrenching story will be released on November 9th. I find the concept deeply interesting, and I hope this will be a book in which the character’s feelings become almost palpable to the reader. I’ve been waiting for this book since its announcement, and I can’t wait to finally read it. Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong The sequel of Chloe Gong’s acclaimed novel, this book completes the duology of a unique and intricate retelling of Romeo and Juliette. It’s Sangai, 1927, and we follow the story of Roma and Juliette, two ambitious members of opposing gangs who might find themselves working together against all odds. But, as Juliette’s position in the Scarlet Gang is put on the line, she must choose between the boy she loves, and the power she cherishes. Coming out on November 16, Our Violent Ends picks up right where the first book left. This time, a dangerous power, and the risk of civil war lingers over the city. To keep the city from falling apart, Juliette and Roma must find a way to work through betrayals, secrets, hate and maybe the most dangerous of all -- love. Chloe Gong has a way of weaving tragedy, action, and longing into her writing; that made These Violent Delights so precious for readers. This is probably one of the most anticipated sequel release of the year. Stakes are higher, and this book is destined to be cathartic. Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson The final installment of Sanderson’s Skyward trilogy is coming out November 23. It’s hard to summarize the final book without spoiling the other two, but here’s my shot at it. In a universe where humans seem to be at the brisk of extinction, Spensa works hard to become a pilot, and leave the planet she grew up in, one that is terrorized by aliens. Soon, she’ll discover how vast the universe is, and will face everything, from power-hungry aliens determined on ending the human race, to her family secrets and old grudges. Paula Argudois a young planster with too much passion and too little time on a day. She has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, whether they are thoroughly researched flash fiction pieces or improvised bedtime stories.
