Tales of love and hardship come in various mediums: novels, epics, movies, plays, games, podcasts, etc. But how do you know which one is the best fit for your story? Normally when I start drafting my outline I have more or less an idea of which format I will use to tell it. Most of the time this comes hand in hand with where I get the idea from. A movie inspires me to write a movie, a podcast, a podcast and so on. However, there have been times that while I’m writing my story the format ends up changing. This transformation occurs as I grow as a creative and the resources I have at hand change. For example, my story “Mariage D’amour” was initially conceptualized as a novel but then I went to a filmmaking summer camp when they asked me to write a script. I was already struggling with said story and so decided to take it and just change the format- when I finished the script I had hopes that I could make it into a reality with some friends as actors. Considering “Mariage D’amour” was in the realm of magical realism, my dad and teacher suggested to me that instead of trying to do it live-action go through the animation route instead, but I didn’t listen to them until the pandemic hit. It was the summer of 2020 and suddenly I had far too much time in my hands than I knew what to do with, so I decided to perfect the story-board of Mariage D’amour, take a photo of the drawings and then asked my family and friends if they could record the dialog. This hybrid between an animatic and stop-motion ended up being the final iteration of “Mariage D’amour”, a far cry from the novel I first thought the story would be. With the change in format aspects of the story also changed, the character went from being a boy to a girl because most of my friends were femme-aligned, for example. For me choosing the format of a story depends on what I want to do. Do I want to create an alien monster only using sounds, do I want for my story to be published in a literary journal, do I want poetry to be the vehicle through which my character expresses? But the format I end up using completely depends on what I am able to do. Do I know enough about sound design to create said monster, is there a journal out there that would be the perfect home to my story, can I make my character express themself through poetry without sounding cheesy? Like any other part of writing it varies from person to person, but I hope a brief description of my creative journey can help you make a decision.
