5 Hispanic Songs That Tell A Narrative7/24/2022 Music is a medium for storytelling. Just like writing, lyrics and instruments can explore themes and emotions. This is a list of some songs in Spanish that you will enjoy listening to whether you are learning to speak the language and want to find new ways to practice, or simply enjoy music that could be made into a book. Find the songs mentioned in this article and more in this playlist. 1)Destino o casualidad - Melendi, Ha*Ash
If you enjoy reading stories with dual points of view, then this song was made for you. Melendi and Ha*Ash alternate the perspectives of our two main characters; a man and a woman who feel lost and alone. She was walking down the street, absorbed by her thoughts and her confusion. He was having trouble sleeping, and while Michael Bolton was playing on the radio, he decided to go on a walk. They meet each other by chance or, as others like to call it, destiny. The song includes clever dialogue, compelling inner monologue, and quick but meaningful descriptions that tell a story about love and hope. 2)Pies Descalzos, Sueños Blancos - Shakira
The story of humanity. Starting with references to the Biblical story of Adam and Eve. Exploring the ages of discovery, the construction of a world in which everything can be measured, built, and named. Moving through time until we reach the present. Doing your homework, sleeping at a certain hour, working, trying not to forget how to dance the waltz during your quince party. All in a pop-rock song by the one and only Shakira. “Pies Descalzos, Sueños Blancos” uses sarcasm to criticize the standards and stereotypes of society, and the way they have developed through time. 3)A Dónde Vamos - Morat
If a beach read could be turned into a song, “A Dónde Vamos” would be it. Set in Madrid, vibrant and lively, it portrays the idea of a relationship in which, even though decades may pass, the couple still searches for adventure. The first stanza is written in past tense, and it recalls their meeting. Subtly, the song then transitions to the present and the future of the couple. It describes the thrill of falling in love that allures romance readers, and includes dialogue in the chorus. Morat explains that this song is inspired by their friend’s love story, which happened in the same Spanish city. 4)Lobo-hombre en Paris - La Unión
In Madrid as well, about forty years before Morat’s song was released, a university student called Rafa Sánchez picked up a collection of Boris Vian’s stories. It is in a book called “Los perros, el deseo y la muerte” (Dogs, death and desire) that “Le Loup-Garou” (The werewolf) catches his attention, and so he decides to write a song based on it with his band. Denis is a black wolf that feels fascinated by humans. He spends his time collecting their artifacts and watching couples in Paris. Until one night, he is bitten by a mage. From then on, he turns into a human every night. He meets a woman while dining at a restaurant, they stroll through the streets of the city, and they contemplate the full moon. The song ends at this point of the story, but in the book, Denis discovers that being human comes with a peculiar set of fears, complications, and —perhaps most dangerous of all— thoughts. The rock band combined this gothic story with instrumentation that evokes both Vain’s obscure imagination and the fun music style of the early 80s. “Lobo-hombre en Paris” places 61st on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 200 pop-rock singles in Spanish. 5)Jueves - La Oreha de Van Gogh
If there is one song I want you to listen to after reading this article, it is “Jueves”. Especially if you like Folklore or Evermore by Taylor Swift. Delicate piano and vocals start the song. A young woman takes a train every weekday. She puts on her best skirt, she hopes that she will encounter the man she has fallen for. To her, every time their eyes meet is special. And finally, on the morning of March 11, she builds up the courage to talk to him. For a moment she is convinced that she made a mistake. But then time stops, and he approaches her. He has chosen not to take the direct train for countless mornings, just to see her. Like swallows going back to their nest, they have searched for each other. The piano slows down, they enter a tunnel, lights dim, she touches his face. And they have found fragile, young, innocent love. Thursday, March 11 of 2004 is the date of the train bombings in Madrid. Paula Argudois a young planster with too much passion and too little time on a day. She has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, whether they are thoroughly researched flash fiction pieces or improvised bedtime stories.
