Ketterdam was inspired by Amsterdam and Narnia by the Mourne Mountains. If we look around us, Earth is filled with a variety of landscapes that are great contenders for the fictional world. This is my pick for some of the places on our planet that I think belong inside a fantasy -or maybe even sci-fi- bestselling book. Note: If there is not an image before the description, you can click on the name of the place to see a picture of it. 1. Udo Island, South Korea By the end of this month, canola flowers will begin to bloom all around Udo Island. Visiting the canola flower fields is a must if you go to Jeju during spring. I believe the yellow flowers would go perfectly with light-hearted scenes. 2. Hvitserkur, Iceland Alberto Zanetti / Unsplash The Hvitserkur is a huge basalt formation in the ocean, located near the Vatnsnes peninsula. The two holes on the dark rock make it look like a dragon that is drinking the seawater. Quite fantastical if you ask me. 3. The Galapagos Islands Pedro Szekely / flickr Home to hundreds of endemic species, the Galapagos are famous for their white-sand beaches and lava fissures that are now traversed by saltwater. The volcanic islands hosted pirate ships centuries ago too. 4. Salto Grande, Chile Bordered by mountains, many of them snow-covered, Salto Grande includes a wide waterfall and a lengthy river that passes through treacherous, high-altitude terrains. It is located in the Torres del Paine National Park, which also has icebergs and golden pampas. 5. Positano, Italy Jack Ward / Unsplash This picturesque village in southern Italy not only has festive markets and roads but also ruins that date back to ancient Rome. I’d love to read a story that has this kind of colorful setting. 6. Fairy Lake Tree, Canada The name is self-explanatory, it is not hard to imagine a fairy village in a place like this. The tree that seems to float over the river has resisted all kinds of strong winds and rains. In fact, when the tide rises, it can be completely covered by the water. 7. Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, Indonesia Dwinanda Nurhanif Mujito / Unsplash The morning fog and the meandering river make the “one-thousand waterfalls” look almost like a mythological place. Behind them lays the active Semeru volcano, which is also the highest mountain in Java. 8. Sakoneta Beach, Spain The precarious rocks of Sakoneta Beach give the place an obscure but fascinating atmosphere. The beach formed during millions of years, and its string terrain treks from the cliff to the ocean. 9. Blyde River Canyon, South Africa The unusual rock formations and the earthy tones of the Blyde River Canyon make it a unique place, not only to visit but also to write about. As it unwinds through mountains and valleys, it has waterfalls and a diverse fauna to admire. The perfect place for a quest. 10. Peter I Island, Antarctica Peter I Island has a thick snow glacier layer and a 40-meter-high ice wall. It is mysterious, volcanic, and perfect for adventurers. Which other places could inspire a fantasy setting? Feel free to let us know in the comments below. Paula Argudois a young planster with too much passion and too little time on a day.
