Ah, the trope. It’s a common criticism of amateur writing: the prose is purple, and the plot is just too tropey. Often, this is used to imply the writing isn’t original enough- that it borrows too heavily from other popular works in the genre, following staid plotlines and character templates rather than truly innovating. This is a legitimate concern.
Clearly, the way to avoid writing tropey fiction is to A) avoid it altogether and/or B) reclaim the trope: put your own spin on it. Either is valid. For the purposes of this article, we’ll be focusing mainly on identifying different common tropes, not necessarily to shame writing that includes one of the tropes, but more to help you make informed decisions about your writing. Other Places Than New York2/19/2023 From the first avengers movie to One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston, there are countless stories set in New York or about the protagonist wishing to be in the city that never sleeps.
Setting is key to a story, it informs the characters, makes the plot happen, in short creates the rules of the world. The surface of the earth is 510.1 million km^2, so why is it that so many of the darts storytellers throw to the globe seem to land in New York? USA? Europe? Or just, not the global south? If you could travel to the future, what would you see? What innovations have humans come up with? What do our relationships look like? Have we improved? Classic science fiction writers asked themselves these questions too, and many of their imagined futures have become our present.
These are four speculations which are now our reality. Writer Affirmations for 20232/18/2023 23 Writer Affirmations for 2023

One can hone their writing skills to an extent where one can get their creative juices flowing to sketch out a scintillating story. Many people go in search of online classes and tutors to level up their creative game. You cannot only learn from reading but also learn to write from reading books. So, if you read any of these five books, you need not to worry about your writer’s burnout anymore as these will surely aid you in your WIPs:
This is a tired world, ours, full of alarmist headlines and triple pandemics. It’s difficult, sometimes, not to let it all feel hopeless. The world is rotting, slowly but surely, from our human pollutants; wildfires are razing, seas are rising or will be soon, entire species are going extinct.
And yet. Equally important as the call to battle is the call to rest. The call to set down your instruments of war - an iPhone or an Android; pick your poison - and rejoice in the simple luxury of life. The pleasures and the discoveries. Christmas, Day of the Dead, Diwali, Spring Festival. One of the elements that make cultures so rich and diverse is holidays. Among lanterns in the sky, delicious food, and people dancing and laughing, there is nothing quite like celebrating a festivity. In an SFF world, holidays are often overlooked, but they have the potential not only to deepen the world you are crafting, but they can also strengthen character relationships and personal traits.
So, what do you need to consider when creating a festivity? There are four core elements: the origin, the details and symbols, the interactions, and the perspective (or as I like to call them, the ODIP). The H.E.R.M.E.T.I.C.S of Worldbuilding2/18/2023 As a writer you are to create your world in a time of few days/weeks or months as well. Whether you are writing a book, a TV skit or a script for a play, it is essential to make your concocted world feel real. It should function like a real world. The world building is like creating a universe of your own. You can pitch in different time zone, geographical territory, people of different temperament, climate and socio-political infrastructure and what not.
To nail the process of world building is important as this is where your entire story is going to take place. Oh the second draft… Of the three types of editing, developmental editing is the most important to get right, and can be the most challenging. On the other hand, it can also be the most rewarding by giving you clarity on what your book is actually about, how to make your plot work, and why you wrote it in the first place.
There are three types of editing you should do to your manuscript: developmental, line, and copy edits. The process becomes more detailed with each kind of editing. Therefore, developmental edits are the broadest. Recently we’ve also published articles on line editing and copy editing. Categories
