Children of War: A Collection by Rebat Matin
famineFor this piece, I wanted to highlight the loss of food and water. I believe this is one of the most important factors to highlight because of countries such as Yemen who are facing the largest humanitarian crisis in the world where malnutrition and famine are one of the highest causes of death. It is estimated to reach three times the death toll of the holocaust.
loss of a companionIn this piece I decided to highlight the meaningful bonds that children of war often lose whether that be with a sentimental object or a pet. I used black and blue ink on opposite sides of the piece to show good vs. evil. The cat drawn in black is disappearing into the darkness while the child is on the blue side, representing the small amount of good that remains.

loss of a loved oneThe most common loss children of war face is the loss of a loved one. For this piece, the missing person drawn in dotted lines is hugging the child which emphasizes to the audience the loneliness or emptiness they may feel from their loss and lack of love.
medium: colored pencil loss of an educationIn our country, most of us are fortunate enough to receive an education but there are many countries around the world who do not have the same opportunity. Children of war are especially victims of this due to factors that are outside of their control.
