In this day and age we can start to forget about our trans future. So to remind you my beautiful reader that trans people have existed in the past and will continue to exist in the future, I bring to you 5 sci-fi short stories with trans main characters, and what’s best! They are all free to access if you’ve got internet. The constellations are unrecognizable here by Andrew Joseph White Amavon has three months left aboard the SSE Patroclus a blessing-class hospital ship, which he would use to get himself the necessary signatures he needs for top surgery and learn more about the beautiful scarred boy he harbors a crush on: Jenea. A story about two people taking back piece by piece their autonomy over their bodies, even when no one in the universe wants them to grant them that simple kindness. Trigger warnings for medical abuse, Disregard for personal autonomy, dysphoria, mental health issues, Suicide, trans misgendering or other transphobic depictions and violence/combat Azure_Husky’s twitter thread This untitled masterpiece shows us how heart-wrenching transformative stories can happen through social media. A trans woman in denial would rather break the laws of physics and invent quantum communication than go to therapy (which honestly, mood). In a last attempt to see if any of her other selves ever let themselves become the girl they always were and to allow herself to take the leap and start her transition. A fresh take on the multiverse story, this series of DMs puts you through the ringer not unlike "Everything Everywhere All At Once" in just a few words. Trigger warning for dysphoria and not good mental health. Gender and Other Faulty Software by John Wiswell A non-binary hacker helps an AI space-ship through their gender crisis, and in the process gets promoted and becomes an advocate for questioning gender. A very funny feel-good epistolary that would leave your heart filled with light and wanting for more. “Gender and Other Faulty Software” is an incredible exploration of masculinity, the absurdity of gender and the nature of the relationships between genderqueer people. Only trigger-warnings is transphobia, and anyways the transphobes died at the end, so good for us! The Frequency of Compassion by Merc Fenn Wolfmoor Kaitlyn Falk, an agender, autistic and hyperempathic is an astronaut flying around the orbit of mars with their loyal AI Horatio, when they feel pain in the cold vastness of space. A story brimming with kindness that not only characterizes Kaitlyn but the whole cast, “The Frequency of Compassion” will show you that space is not so lonely after all if you are there to hear the beings around you. Trigger warning for a horrible ex-boyfriend and his transphobic views. Chokechain by Andrew Joseph White The parents of a young boy would rather buy an android daughter than accept that their little girl was actually a boy. What ensues is a very real mix of trans, teenage and older sibling angst, coupled with a perfect integration of social media- showing how it has helped queer people navigate their life. And a perfectly bittersweet ending that shows us that everyone is actually trans. Trigger warning for transphobia and complicated family dynamics. Dear reader, I hope you are able to take some time out of your day to read any of these stories. Science Fiction shapes our future, and I hope we see as many trans people in the genre as they would be in the universe. Ari Ochoa Petzois a Mexican-Venezuelan bi genderfluid writer.
