Juven: who we are & why2/14/2021 Juven is not a word, but it is the stem of a word "juvenile," but we decided against that because it didn't have the same ring. Juven is the companion literary magazine and press to The Young Writers Initiative. We wanted to rebrand and make Juven something that thrives on its own as well, and we do have some ambitious plans (like chapbooks, anthologies, and even novels). Juven is dedicated to youthful voices, but our press is not restricted to writers under 26 because we want to open the possibilities, but we're always looking for work that reminds us of that juven spirit. But what does it mean be have a "juven" spirit with your writing? Juven doesn't mean immature or underdeveloped. As many of you all know and have seen, young writers have powerful voices that are very inspiring. Juven means a love to explore, experiment, to learn. Juven means to bring a fresh, bright voice in a world that is bogged down by monotonous dialogue. We want new perspectives. We want to be changed, we want to read writing that makes us curious, eager, hungry for more. Juven is a home for work that strives to say something, and work that changes people. We want to give a platform for young writers to do that, and we also want to give a platform for older writers to do that as well.
We are still very closely tied with TYWI. Our founder is the same and much of our staff works with TYWI as well. But we separated for financial purposes. If your writing isn't "there" yet, or you want to develop it, we always encourage TYWI's services. We implore you to explore them and to develop yourself as a writer. Many of our events are open for writers over 25 as well. We hope that you enjoy our press and authors as much as we do, and if you're 25 or under, we hope to receive work from you! We provide free feedback on every submission, and strive to publish the writer, not just the piece. We hope we can bring back that lively, explorative, and curious spirit to the literary world.
