“To travel far, there is no better ship than a book.” - Emily Dickinson We want to see the world and the marvels it has to offer. Explore new places, their food, their rivers, their secret alleyways. The way light enters through a tinted window or the scent of a forest. Even further, we want to discover new worlds, places with majestic creatures and plants. That is simply human nature. Fantasy uses imagination as paint and words as brushes to create a picture and transport us anywhere. This is a compilation of places that exist in our world and could just be the inspiration of your next fantasy setting. La Boca, Argentina When Italian immigrants arrived in the city of Buenos Aires, the harbour of La Boca was tinted in bright shades and filled with music. The culture that grew and developed in this neighbourhood has kept the allure of the streets to this day. Waitomo Caves, New Zealand Caves glimmering in blue, irregular rock surfaces creating constellations. Reflected in ink-dark water, they almost seem ready to reveal a long-lost prophecy. Valletta, Malta Facing a sky blue ocean lies an architectural achievement, a temple that displays the techniques of the era in which it was built, and a rock underground complex. This is only one of the elements that builds the allure of the city of Valletta. Kuang Si Falls, Laos The lush vegetation of the area hides a secret that has surely left generations of travellers fascinated. The turquoise waters of the Kuang Si Falls fill natural pools made of unique rock and roots formations. Pumakkele, Turkey As the sun sets on Pumakkele, its terraces reflect shades of indigo and crimson. They create the illusion of ice, but they are actually made of minerals filled with water from hot springs. Lake Retba, Senegal Barely separated from the Atlantic Ocean, a pink lake is found in the middle of the Cap Vert Peninsula. Its intense colour gleams with the sunlight, and is only broken by boats of fishermen looking for salt and tilapia. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? What is your all-time favourite fantasy setting? Perhaps inspiration for a new story remains in these questions. Paula Argudois an Ecuadorian writer who weaves culture and magic into her stories.
