The novel by Laura Nowlin is a best seller romance of New York as it describes a heartrending tale of missed chances and a candid representation of childhood friends to lovers trope. Laura Nowlin is a famous NYT selling author who has done her undergraduate in English with specialization in creative writing from The University of Missouri. Apart from writing novels, Nowlin works at a public library where he gathers a lot of inspiratory prompts for her creative writing. she lives in St. Louis with her family. The story revolves around two friends, Autumn and Finny who have been fast friends from a very young age; even their mothers are good acquaintances. They were also each other’s neighbours. Autumn is bold and quirky while Finny is shy and likes him a lot. However, course of events in both of the characters’ lives change when they share an unexpected kiss back in grade 8th. Fate manages to make them encounter each other albeit they parted their own ways and made friends with other people. The novel encompasses a wide spectrum of emotions. It is a YA contemporary fiction. Although there isn’t much plot line to it but I loved how Nowlin created all her characters well- roundedly (both the primary as well as secondary). Each character is a new chunk of life in itself which intrigued me a lot. Moreover, the writer does a great effort in bringing unity of effect through her deft skills of aura shifting. The first chapter leaves us on a mysterious note while the rest of the chapters help us unfold into the character’s lives more than the circumstances itself. Plus, the writing style is simple and has a literary feel to it. yet, It’s beautiful to such an extent that at times the words seem to rip your heart out your chest. If He Had Been With Me is a modernized version of a buildungsroman (of two character simultaneously in this novel’s case). People with an appreciative eye for love, slice of life and grief, this novel is perfect for them. So, if you are Colleen Hoover or a TikTok book fan, I recommend this book for you. This is not a light hearted read but will surely leave you with a lot of thoughts to ponder over as you flip the last page of the novel.
